SUPER SUCKERS: GIANT OCTOPUS: MARINE SCIENCE LECTURE SERIES

(Tuesday March 9 @ 7 pm at YMCA Camp Orkila)

Beautiful, bashful and brainy, the giant Pacific octopus leads a life of mystery. With a personality that’s as complex as its appearance, this animal is a master of disguise that can open jars, mimic other octopuses, and finds its way through mazes in laboratory experiments. Tim Carpenter, Curator of Fish and Invertebrates at the Seattle Aquarium, will lead the lecture.

COUNTY COUNCIL SPECIAL PUBLIC MEETING ON ORCAS

Please join County Council Members Richard Fralick, District 4, Orcas West, Gene Knapp, District 5, Orcas East, County Administrator Pete Rose and County Auditor Milene Henley for a Town Hall conversation. Items for discussion will be the continuing county Budget Crisis, the Solid Waste Program, the Uplands’ Critical Areas Ordinance, the Shoreline Master Plan Update and other important issues facing the County. An open questions and answers forum will follow this presentation.

VINTAGE JAZZ & UKULELE: MISS ROSE & HER RHYTHM PERCOLATORS

Enjoy the Jazz Age with Miss Rose! Orcas’ Charly Robinson opens the show. This is a family-friendly, all-ages event. The Seattle-based quartet faithfully re-creates the vintage jazz of the early 1920s to the mid ’30s- an era when this music provided a playful soundtrack for the flappers who danced the Charleston. A portion of the proceeds from the show will benefit the Orcas Island Education Foundation. BABYSITTING CLINIC FOR BOYS & GIRLS @ EASTSOUND FIRE HALL

(Sunday, March 14 from 10 am – 3 pm)

In this class we focus on basic childcare and safety, emergency action skills, safe play, babysitter responsibilities, and job recruitment. Each participant will receive a babysitting certificate and be placed on a community babysitters list on the Orcas Rec website if they choose. Must be 12 years & older. CHRISTOPHER EVANS TEACHES MOVEMENT @ ORCAS SENIOR CENTER

Christopher Evans will be offering Transformational Movement Lessons (TML’s) twice a week during the month of March. Christopher just completed a three year training to be certified in the Anat Baniel Method, based on the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. Participation in the class greatly enhances flexibility, strength, coordination and well being. These classes have helped people overcome pain, reverse the symptoms of aging, re-discover vitality, improve performance and discover the joy and pleasure of movement. BACK TO BASICS: SPRING PILATES CLASS @ ORCAS MOVEMENT STUDIO

(Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30 pm, beginning March 16th)

In this seven week class we will focus on connecting to and strengthening the abdominal muscles; Learning how to stabilize the body with the abdominals; and using stabilization to gain greater flexibility and strength through the rest of the body. Basic mat exercises and gradually add more for a dynamic full body workout.
