Position Summary

Orcas Island Freight Lines and Island Trucking & Hauling are seeking a reliable, professional Class A CDL Driver to join our team. This position involves transporting a variety of loads including freight, recyclables, solid waste, logs, construction materials, and other commodities throughout the San Juan Islands and Northwest Washington.

The primary route is Orcas Island to the Burlington/Bellingham area and back, typically 4–5 round trips per week. Routes, equipment, and daily responsibilities may vary, and drivers may operate dry vans, flatbeds, walking-floor trailers, refuse transfer trailers, and other commercial vehicles as needed.

A significant portion of this position may involve flatbed hauling, including securing loads with chains, binders, straps, and tarps. Applicants should be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and understand the importance of proper load securement and safety procedures.

The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, adaptable, and comfortable working independently while representing our company professionally with customers, vendors, and the public.

A valid Class A CDL and the ability to operate a manual transmission are required.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate company-owned trucks and trailers on assigned routes.
• Transport freight, recyclables, solid waste, logs, construction materials, equipment, and other commodities as required.
• Operate dry vans, flatbeds, refuse transfer trailers, and walking-floor trailers.
• Inspect, load, unload, secure, and verify cargo.
• Properly secure flatbed loads using chains, binders, straps, tarps, and other securement equipment.
• Travel via the Washington State Ferry system and adapt to schedule changes when necessary.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report mechanical concerns.
• Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment as needed.
• Communicate effectively with dispatch, customers, vendors, and receiving personnel.
• Follow all DOT, FMCSA, state, and local regulations.
• Refuel vehicles and perform routine equipment checks.
•  Maintain clean and professional vehicles and equipment.
•  Report accidents, incidents, violations, or equipment failures immediately.
•  Assist with warehouse, yard, and freight operations as needed.

Preferred Experience

Strong preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

• Flatbed hauling and load securement
• Log hauling
• Refuse transfer or solid waste transportation
• Walking-floor trailer operation
• Freight and LTL transportation
• Forklift operation
• Rural or island transportation logistics
• Operating in challenging weather and ferry-dependent environments

Requirements and Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
• Minimum of 3 years of commercial driving experience
• Ability to operate a manual transmission (required)
• Doubles and Hazmat endorsements preferred
• Clean driving record with no recent moving violations
• No DUI/DWI convictions within the past 10 years
• Must be at least 25 years old (insurance requirement)
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical freight-handling duties
• Ability to safely climb on trailers and secure loads
• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening
• Strong work ethic, dependability, and commitment to safety

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation starts at $32.00 per hour and will be based on experience, qualifications, endorsements, and demonstrated skills.
