Orcas Island's Winter Solstice Luminaria Parade is a beautiful and moving celebration marking the longest night of the year and the return of light. Participants carry handcrafted lanterns, often adorned with personal touches, illuminating the streets of Eastsound as they walk together. Luminaria workshops are held across the island in the weeks leading up to the big night. The parade culminates at the Village Green where participants dance and sing songs in honor of the light’s slow return. First organized in 2023 by the Orcas Island Community Foundation, the solstice celebration symbolizes hope and community during the winter season and is the perfect opportunity to embrace the quiet beauty of the longest night and look forward to the promise of longer days ahead.
